When a relationship with a narcissist ends, the caretaking partner is often left confused, deeply hurt, and often still emotionally connected, while the narcissist seems to easily move on to the next relationship. Healing from a Narcissistic Relationship offers guidance about what to expect as the relationship unravels and how to cope with the fallout. It also helps the reader learn to truly disengage and move through the grief process.

Presenting techniques for healing and rebuilding self-esteem and self-confidence, this book offers a guide to developing emotional strength and encourages forgiveness and reconciliation with the past. It shows the reader how to increase emotional self-protections, quit caretaking in relationships, and become more independent and self-loving. Using real stories, Margalis Fjelstad offers a process of healing that can direct the reader away from former patterns of inequitable relationships and toward loving, caring connections that can truly grow healthfully and flourish. It shows that ending a relationship with a narcissist may be the best thing that ever happened.

I bought this for a friend going through a separation from a narcissistic spouse but decided to read it first. Wow - I learned a lot about my own behavior and relationships in the process. This book helps to define narcissistic behaviors and identifies the dance that they undertake with "caretakers" - those that they seek to support them.

In my view, there are degrees to narcissism. This work is directed toward the extreme end of the spectrum and advises accordingly. I think this work offers a broader understanding of the issue than the title gives it credit. If you want to better understand narcissism as a whole (whether or not you are in a relationship with one), this book is a good resource.

I purchased as an audiobook and it really fasttracked my healing after 4 years with a person with NPD/BPD. I recommend doing all the writing out of your answers to the questions she poses at end of each chapter, do it, as it really does help so much. She perfectly described the relationship, how it started, how it went and even accurately predicted what he would do next - and prepared me. As a natural caretaker, keep strong boundaries is challenging for me, but this book really helps.

I am recently out of a 3.5yr narcissistic relationship and have really been struggling to deal with the loss and not being able to comprehend a lot of the 'why'. This book really helps see things clearly, and why certain things happen and why they do what they do.

The only thing I don't like about this book, and most other 'self help' books is it is targeted at men being the 'wrong doer'. So as a male it can throw me off the reading a bit as all of the terms and statements against the narcissist use a masculine term.

This is Psychologist Margalis Fjelstad's second book c2017 . Her first book in 2013 included both narcissist and borderline personality disorders and her appropriate term "caretaking" for them (coerced into it).

Margalis wrote this book in 2017, right after retiring after 30 years of being a clinical therapist. She shares how her mother qualified for a borderline personality disorder, which has dysfunctional similarities with narcissism. So she speaks from personal experience, clinical experience, and proper education. The reader benefits from this book from a professional publisher (these qualities make for good use of your time, money, and energy).

This book is excellent in focusing on helping you leave the caretaking relationship, heal after the crash, become empowered, and then transform your life. If you want another book on narcissism, I suggest:
---- The Narcissist in Your Life: Recognizing the patterns and learning to break free. Julie Hall (2019) $15 (Includes 3-pages specifically on parental alienation, but you buy it to learn how your ex thinks!)

If you are a parent, you'll also want her newest book, "Raising Resilient Children with a Borderline or Narcissistic Parent." by Margalis Fjelstad and Jean McBride (2020) $18. And you will also need a book on "Parental Alienation" (which is when the other parent undermines your parenting and indoctrinates your children to reject you). Good "starter" books for that include:
---- Divorce Poison: Protecting the parent/Child bond from a vindictive ex. (2009). Richard Warshak, Ph.D. $10
---- Don't Alienate the Kids! Raising resilient children while avoiding high conflict divorce. Bill Eddy JD, LCSW (2nd edition 2020) $18
---- Splitting: Protecting yourself while divorcing someone with a borderline or narcissistic personality disorder. Kreger, Eddy (2011) $16
---- BIFF for Co-Parent Communication: Your Guide to Difficult Texts, Emails, and Social Media Posts by Bill Eddy, Annette Burns, Kevin Chafin (2020) $13
---- The high-conflict custody battle: Protect yourself and your kids from a toxic divorce, false accusations, and parental alienation. Amy J. L. Baker, Ph.D., Bone, Ph.D., Attorney Ludmer (2014) $14

After coming out of a relationship with a narcissist and realising everything I thought was real was a lie, I needed to think logically in order to move on and heal. I am astounded at how accurately this book describes everything that happened to me during/after my relationship with a narcissist. It feels like they watched my relationship and based this book on my experience. I truly truly recommend reading if you’re trying to heal/come to terms with what’s happened to you. Knowing everything in this book makes it impossible to go back/be tricked again.

I found this book extremely helpful in untangling the mare's nest that is a relationship with a narcissist. It listed the detrimental dynamics, showing which tactics don't belong in healthy relationships. Before reading this book I was taking on the main share in the failure of my relationship. Reading this book provided me with clarity on cause and effect, manipulator and victim. The second part of the book provides strategies for moving beyond the harm and out of the victim mindset. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter are very thought-provoking. Definitely going to read it a second time! There are many books on narcissism out there; I appreciate that this author has the academic credentials (Ph.D., LMFT) in her field to speak with authority.

This book has been the most useful and helpful experience in my recovery. After 40 years of existence in a narcissistic relationship, followed by a complete emotional collapse, Dr. Fjelstad's words of acknowledgement and advice are ringing in my ears. I had already received many of her suggestions and views through friends and my therapist, but it has taken Dr. Fjelstad's book to put it all in order and help me understand that I am not alone in this; that all my feelings and experiences are real and true; that it is OK for me to have these feelings; and here's a "roadmap" on getting yourself back on track. Maybe it is just that I am ready to hear these things, but from the Introduction (which sounded like she had been writing about my entire life,) followed by each chapter (which read as if she had been following me blow by blow through the aftermath of my breakdown,) bells are going off in my head with the cry of "wake up and listen!" It has taken me over 2 years just to begin the healing process, THANK YOU! Dr. Fjelstad, for writing this incredible book. It has totally changed my life for the better, and started me on the road to finally heading toward finding myself and healing.

This book is changing my life. My husband of 18 years just decided last month that he never loved me and our marriage is over. Struggling through how my life was all of the sudden in ruins and he had no emotions, besides anger at me, has been so hard. And then I found this book. I rented a dozen books from the library trying to figure out what was going on, but reading this one was like reading our entire relationship story from day one to where I am now. This is helping me to see the situation clearly and helping me to identify positive steps forward to healing. Keeping a journal along while I am reading is helping to put my relationship experiences into perspective and I imagine reading through it over time will help me keep that perspective should he decide to keep trying to keep me off balance.

This book is invaluable for anyone recovering from a relationship to a suspected Narcissistic. It covers the thought processes of the narcissist and of the care taker, it outlines why it is so futile and helps to guide the reader away from destructive behavior patterns and towards a meaningful recovery. I read many samples of books on this subject, and chose to buy this one. It has changed my life and hastened my recovery. The book explains what was going on in the relationship unbeknownst to you, and explains the disorder in a clear, empathetic way. However, it focuses on healing and moving on. Not a “just snap out of it” but how and what you can do to improve future relationships and your relationship with yourself. Let’s stop focusing on HIM and take care of ourselves instead. (After all, someone’s got to do it and the narcissist couldn’t care less). I’m giving this book to others who do not have issues with a narcissist but want to improve their own understanding of themselves. I wish I had read this six months ago, I would’ve saved myself so much heartache. Even if you’re not sure if you are dealing with a narcissist (it is hard to swallow) do some research and find out. Please pamper yourself and take care - you of all people deserve it.

I've read Fjelstad's earlier book Stop Caretaking, which was very good. Having moved on from my (in most ways beautiful ad amazing) marriage to a complicated narcissist to no contact, I feel this is even more helpful -- especially, for my circumstances, the last two sections of the book (Empowerment and Transforming Your Life). Some parts could be intense enough that I could only read a few pages at a time. Fjelstad is pragmatic but still sympathetic -- she puts you in control, without falling into some of the "it's your hidden faults and flaws that led you here" stuff I've seen or the overly maudlin, critical, or patronizing, for god's sake, there are two people in a relationship and we're all stumbling our way. Explain rather than judge, be scientifically supportive and guiding rather than hugging us or bashing the narcissist, and treat us like (hurt) adults rather than abused puppies: all good.. So the tone, for me, is excellent. Fjelstad's books and ~monthly newsletters, along with listening to Tara Brach podcasts as I fall asleep, have really helped me.

Like her first book, the author’s second book is very helpful to the victims of narcissistic abuse. I appreciate her direct, unemotional tone; the judgmental and often hysterical tone found in some other books on narcissistic abuse is not to be found here. It is clear she has a lot of experience dealing with real narcissists, which are a bizarre breed, much stranger, more numerous and more insidiously destructive than most people realize, and it’s clear she has a lot of experience helping their victims recover. Each chapter addresses a specific challenge for people who are recovering from narcissistic relationships and who want to make sure they don’t unknowingly fall into another one ever again.

This book, and Margalis's previous book "Stop Caretaking...." are absolutely the best books available for someone either in or leaving a narcissistic relationship. When you are in a relationship with a narcissist, their abusive behaviors are so frustrating and confusing that you lose your confidence and self-esteem, and question yourself as to what is wrong with you. Read her books - you will find explanations for the typical behaviors and patterns and ways to either deal with them if necessary, or if you need to leave the relationship -- how to heal and rebuild your life.

I got such value out of Margalis Fjelstad's first book

Stop Caretaking the Borderline or Narcissist: How to End the Drama and Get On with Life

that I wanted to read this second book as well. Dr. Fjelstad outlines a process to help caretakers change their lives for the better. She has done an excellent job of dividing the 18 chapters into 5 sections from definitions of the narcissist and caretaker, to dealing with the end of the relationship, healing, empowerment, and then transforming your life. I found the "tasks" and reflection questions very helpful. A really powerful task was creating my Circle of Loving Support (found in Chapter 18: Living Your Intention). This diagram is a series of 6 concentric circles with your name in the middle of it. In the circle around your name you write the names of the closest and dearest people in your life. Next circle holds the names of friends, acquaintances, and others. In the last circle is your Code of Well-Being. This visual is a great reminder that I am not alone and there are many people (and organizations) who care about me. I have read this book 3 times and have highlighted key phrases throughout. I've placed a box around the Problem Solving Technique, Narcissism Cues, and Red Flags. There is so much to understanding why one is a caretaker and how to heal when one ends a relationship with a narcissist. I have read many books on narcissism, but Margalis Fjelstad's books are stellar. It is almost like she has been following me around and taking notes. Now, I understand how I came to be a caretaker and how to heal and develop future healthy relationships that are built on the partnership model. I am now feeling optimistic about my future.
